And he is in a commited relationship, but if anything changes he'll keep me in mind. He also called to let me know that next week he is on a new mail route, he just wanted to make sure I didn't think the two events were related.

Good for you for trying. And it was awefully nice of him to call not only to say thanks but no thanks but also to clarify that him leaving the route had nothing to do with you. 95% of guys would have done nothing, not replied and just left that route without a word. At least you've got good taste.
Maybe the next mailguy will be cuter, eat doughnuts and be single?
